About
Al-Marqab is a huge black-basalt castle on a hill overlooking the sea about 6 km south of Baniyas. First fortified in 1062, it was bought by the Knights Hospitaller in 1186 and became their headquarters in Syria until the Mamluk sultan Qalawun besieged and took it in 1285. It is one of the largest Crusader castles in the region.
