About
Palmyra is an ancient city in an oasis in the middle of the Syrian desert, a great caravan stop that reached its height in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, when its queen Zenobia defied Rome. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980; the Islamic State group destroyed several of its monuments between 2015 and 2017.
