Arwad is Syria's only inhabited island, about 3 km off the shore of Tartus and reached by boat from the city's harbour. It is known for its narrow lanes, its fishermen and builders of wooden boats, and has two medieval castles and the remains of an ancient Phoenician wall.

The Arwad Citadel is a rectangular fortress in the middle of the island of Arwad; its present form dates from the 13th century and was renewed by the Ottomans. The Templars held the island until 1302, making it the last Crusader stronghold on the Levantine coast; a smaller Ayyubid castle faces the mainland.
