About
The Citadel of Aleppo is one of the oldest and largest castles in the world, on a high mound in the middle of the Old City that has been inhabited since the third millennium BC; remains of a temple of the storm god Hadad were found inside. Most of its present fortifications date from the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods, and it is entered over a bridge through a monumental gate. Damaged during the war years, it reopened to visitors in September 2025.
