Damascus

An Ottoman complex on the bank of the Barada river, commissioned by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and designed by the architect Sinan; its mosque was completed in 1559 and a madrasa was added in 1566. It once hosted pilgrims and the poor, is known for its two slender minarets and domes, and its former cells now house a handicrafts market.

The grave of Mehmed VI Vahideddin, the last sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He died in exile in 1926 and was buried in the cemetery of the Sulaymaniyya Takiyya in Damascus.

A five-star hotel in an 18-storey tower on Shukri al-Quwatli Street, halfway between the Old City and Umayyad Square. It opened in 2004 with 297 rooms and still carries the Four Seasons name, although the international chain no longer manages it.
