The site of ancient Abila, capital of the Roman-era district of Abilene, near the town of Souq Wadi Barada. A Roman road cut into the rock above the Barada gorge, with Latin inscriptions over it, can still be seen.

Wadi Barada is the valley cut by the Barada river between the Zabadani plain and Damascus, its banks lined with villages, orchards and restaurants. It holds the Ain al-Fijeh spring and the remains of ancient Abila at Souq Wadi Barada, and the old railway from Damascus to Zabadani runs through it.
Souq Wadi Barada
A mosque and shrine on a mountaintop above the Barada valley, said by tradition to hold the grave of Abel, son of Adam. The present building dates from the Ottoman period, and visitors also come for the wide view over the valley.
